Bighorn Peak is a remote mountain in the Central Wasatch. Its distance and elevation gain from the nearest trailheads, in Little Cottonwood Canyon and Alpine, make the summit a long haul. There are no maintained trails to its summit, which keep it a lonely, seldom-visited peak, yet there is a trail from Alpine to Lake Hardy, which is a high alpine lake on the east aspect of Bighorn Peak. The true splendor of Bighorn Peak arrives in winter. The majority of the mountain lies above the treeline, so the backcountry ski potential is nearly unlimited. Bighorn’s west ridge also provides some entertaining 4th class scrambling.
