Ouray Area Ice Climbing is highlighted by the Ouray Ice Park. The ice park was opened in 1995 as the first park dedicated solely to ice climbing in the United States. Situated within the Uncompahgre Gorge, just outside of Ouray, Colorado, this ice park is funded by donations and maintained by volunteers. A private landowner has granted public access on the land; the climbing is completely free of charge. The park is composed of two miles of gorge outfitted with sprinkler lines that spray water over the cliffs throughout the winter. Water amounts, and the water spray techniques, are altered throughout the winter season, and throughout the terrain, to detail different types of ice for varied conditions and varied skills levels. All the volunteers ask for is proper etiquette and respect in order to maintain access on the private land. Every year the Ouray Ice Festival is held to celebrate the sport of ice climbing, attract new interest in the sport, and raise funds to support the park. Roughly 70% of the park’s funds are raised by this festival. In addition to the ice park, the mountains surrounding Ouray have extensive icefalls in every direction.
